A rare opportunity to acquire this iconic Fender Stratocaster from the highly collectible International Series. Finished in times 'Cathay Black', this 1981 model has matured beautifully, showcasing the unmistakable character of a well-preserved vintage instrument!
We're very pleased to have the whole set of 9 'International Series' colours currently in stock! (At least for now, at the time of writing).
Between circa 1979–1982, Fender released the International Series — a short-lived run of Stratocasters offered in striking custom colours. These guitars featured black plastic knobs and pickup covers set against a laminated white pickguard, giving them a unique visual identity compared to traditional finishes of the era.
There is some confusion regarding the exact 'year' of this run, as the headstocks show the 'S9' prefix associated with 1979 production, however as you can see, the body is stamped 1980, and the pots 1979. For the sake of simplicity, we have opted to label the set as '1981' guitars, as it is widely believed the International Series guitars were circulated in 1981.
This example is a desirable three-bolt neck model, offering excellent resonance and a strong, lively playing response. As with most late 1970's era guitars, they are a little on the weighty side, but still have a great vintage tone and vibe.
Model: 1981 Fender International Series Stratocaster
Finish: Morocco Red (original finish, beautifully aged)
Neck Plate: Three-bolt configuration
Pickguard: White laminated with black knobs & pickup covers
Hardware: Original, with light signs of corrosion on screws and metal parts
Frets: Excellent condition – no divots or notable wear
Weight: 4.6kg (slightly on the heavier side)
Case: Original hard case included
This guitar is in very good cosmetic condition for its age, with only minimal signs of play wear. The fret life is excellent, showing no divots or significant wear.
There are some small lacquer dings present, mainly on the lower bout and along the underarm contour on the top of the body, as shown in the pictures. Additionally, there is a slight scuff in the lacquer at the very top of the headstock. These blemishes are minor, age-appropriate, and do not detract from the overall presentation or playability of the instrument.
Hardware shows light, honest patina consistent with its vintage status.
The International Series was produced for only a brief window, making these instruments increasingly scarce and collectible. Morocco Red is a particularly striking finish from this period and stands out in any vintage collection.
A wonderfully resonant and well-playing three-bolt Stratocaster that captures a distinctive era of Fender history — equally suited to collectors, investors, or players seeking a rare vintage piece with bold visual appeal.
